In a 2010 performance that has a David-and-Goliath aspect to it, Herman Miller reached 14.5 percent spending with minority-owned businesses. On a percentage basis, that puts Herman Miller in the same league as the DiversityInc Top 10 companies, a notable collection of some of America’s largest and best known companies, which averaged 13 percent of their direct contractor spending with minority-owned businesses.

MoDOTs Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program works to involve minority-owned, women-owned and disadvantaged businesses in the design and construction of state transportation projects. Under the program, MoDOT sets a goal for the percentage of work that the prime contractor must provide to DBE subcontractors. MoDOT helps DBE companies become certified and monitors DBE participation on major projects. The department also hosts networking opportunities for DBE companies to introduce themselves to area prime contractors and trains DBE owners in good business practices.
