Link between illegal immigrants & ethnic minority businesses

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

The Border Agency receives a tip-off that two curry houses are employing illegal immigrants. The second restaurant not only provided illegal immigrants with work but also accommodation above the restaurant. Among the occupants were Bangladeshi youths who couldn’t speak any English and who were found to be in possession of Islamic extremist terrorist DVD’s. One of them denied having a passport which was discovered in his clothing.

The majority of these raids and arrests of illegal immigrant workers are occurring in ethnic minority communities, and in businesses operated by ethnic minority people. Whether this is an organised and deliberate attempt to encourage illegal immigrants to enter the UK and support them, or just a way to exploit cheap labour and avoid paying tax and National Insurance, both undermine the British economy and raise serious security issues.

Unfortunately the government doesn’t seem to making the connection between ethnic minority communities and illegal immigrants, and doesn’t have any clear policies or ways of dealing with it. The law is also being poorly enforced.

In 2007 The Border Agency arrested more than 5,000 immigrants who entered Britain illegally. Unfortunately the vast majority of these are released and abscond, only a very small percentage are actually deported.

Employers who employ illegal immigrations can face fines of £10,000 for each illegal immigrant they employ.
