Graduation 2010: Honorary Degree Profile – John Thorpe MBE

Leeds City Council Civic Architect, John Thorp, mbe, has been awarded an honorary degree by Leeds Metropolitan as part of our Summer Graduation celebrations.
John was born in Leeds, studied at the Liverpool School of Architecture and has worked for the City Council for over 35 years. Examples of John’s work include the Henry Moore projects at Leeds City Art Gallery and, more recently, the £12 million creation of Millennium Square.
John has been instrumental in developing the current programme of City Centre Squares, Buildings and Spaces such as City Square and Briggate, major civic buildings such as Leeds Town Hall, the City Library and Art Gallery, Victoria Gardens and the renewal of green spaces such as Park Square and Merrion Gardens.
John received a lifetime achievement award in the 2009 Leeds Architecture Awards in recognition of his creation of award-winning places and spaces created by a lifetime of dedication to the city of Leeds.
John received his honorary doctorate in arts from the University’s Faculty of Arts and Society.
