SBI Diversity Project Management offers professional assistance for Diversity Participation

Minneapolis, MN…SBI Diversity Project Management announced on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 that the firm (SBI) would be providing intensive Diversity Participation Assistance for the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) project, “MPHA Elder Community Center and Memory Care Facility,” part of the Heritage Park 2 Project.

In a press conference held on today, project coordinators Pat Buckner and Walter Thomas outlined the detail of this “other than traditional” approach to building awareness to the project by attracting local WBE’s, MBE’s, and Minority/Women Owned businesses with Section 3 qualified contractors. (http://www.mphaonline.org/nts.html) Diversity Manager Doug Holmberg said, “We want local contractors lining up outside our door so we can take them all the way through the process of bidding in a step-by-step process that is unprecedented and very effective. The SBI staff is a group of experienced contractors, planners and construction engineers that will share their knowledge with all who participate.

Pat Buckner, Project Coordinator says, “The assistance SBI is giving women and minority-owned businesses that have a pre-existing WBE, MBE or Section 3 designation is free. SBI will walk them through the steps all the way into the bidding process. Most small contracting firms don’t see this type of solid collaboration. SBI has been put in place to assist the project in creating a fair playing field for the project.”

The bonus for small businesses wanting to submit a bid for work on the Elder Community Center and Memory Care Facility is the following:

The SBI will assist Diversity Bidders with fulfilling the bid requirement checklists; Provide sourcing recommendations for those in need of such things as accounting, insurance and bonding assistance. SBI will inform local Diversity organizations and its members of the project and the opportunities and requirements for bidding.

Walter Thomas, Project Liaison said, “Our immediate plans are to develop and maintain a Diversity subcontractor Mentorship Program to assist Diversity subcontractors with business management and construction project controls through the course of the entire project. This a big step and more importantly, something that needs to happen today!”

The SBI — Diversity Project Management Team is located at 1301 Bryant Avenue North in the MPHA Building (the northwest corner of Bryant and Plymouth Avenue North). For more information, call them to set up an appointment today at (612) 460-7242. Also, to learn more about SBI-Diversity Project Management, visit their website at www.sbiaction.com

What are the benefits of Minority owned business?

Monday, August 16th, 2010

- What are the main benefits of minoirty owned business in New Jersey?

- Does it include anykind of tax benefits?

They may receive priority in certain types of government contracts, same as veterans, women-owned, etc. One minority woman-owned business that did very well some years ago was Whitney Houston’s technology consulting group called Houston Associates. They had double priority, even though Ms. Houston had absolutely nothing to do with the services being provided.

As a small business, how can I have the opportunity to compete with larger companies on Federal projects?

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I manage a small business in Wisconsin. With all of the federal stimulus money that is going into construction projects across the state, I was wondering if there was some certification process that can help us get an edge in bidding for contracts. I have read that the Federal government needs to have 23% of its contracts go to small business. We are not minority or women owned, just small. Are there any programs that we can get certified for the help us gain an edge?

Contact your elected officials. Try a Congressman or Senator……or someone in your town or in your state.
