My Stanford acceptance potential?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

I’ve been wanting to go to Stanford ever since I was a kid and I want to try my luck next year as a senior to apply there. I know Stanford is hard to get into and I really want to go their Med. school, but all the same, I just want to try to get in as an undergraduate. How much will rhese aspects about me heighten my chances at getting accepted into Stanford:
-Certified Nursing Assistant certification (considering working three times a week part-time)
-Health Care Provider CPR
-Enrolled in the IB Programme Junior/Senior year and took AP World Hist. as sophomore and got a 4
-Social officer of Health Occup. Students of America and most likely as a senior also, Vice Pres. of Chess Club (just started this year), and in another club that focuses on college
-Enrolled in the Health Science Academy
-Asian (minority)
-Low income family (free lunch)
-3.6 unweighted GPA as of January of this year (junior)
-Rose from 25% to 12% to 11% percent of class (freshman -> sophomore -> Junior [as of Jan. of this year])
-In my fourth year of Spanish and most likely to take Jap. at community college fall of senior year WHILE IN IB Spanish V (AP level)
-(assuming I will do this) created a volunteer project that raises money to build a school in a third world country, employing locals, using the local products and enrolling children in the slums for 3 or so hours a day (or might just pay THEM to enroll full-time) so they can work to feed their family and learn at the same time
-ACT score: I’m predicting around 32 (got a 27 on Practice ACT without even studying)
-SAT score: At best is a 1800 (I got a 1550-ish on my first and only one but I didn’t study. I prob. will not be able to get above or reach a 2000. I’m relying on my ACT)

Will my extracurricular activities help me a lot since my academics aren’t so hot? And how much will my volunteer org. help me? And should I try working as a CNA (not only for the money but to show colleges that I applied it)?
Also, say I DO get into Stanford and want to go there Med. School. Will they let me go in, because colleges want diversity, and if they let me in, I’d be there for 7 years or so in total? Is that advisable?

Thank you all so much in advance!
Thank you for all of you have responded! But to clear up some confusion, I am NOT applying to the Med. school now. I’m just trying to apply to the normal school.

You know yourself, bump up the gpa. Don’t take the SAT if the ACT is that good. I don’t really know the IB program, but if it’s anything like AP, take as many of those types of classes as you can, and do well! But I would say the most important thing for you to do is start getting focused.

On an abstract level, the jumble of activities that you typed up show a lack of focus. You have so many activities, but not really a meaningful impact(volunteer project has good potential though). Cut down on some, and really apply yourself towards one you are truly passionate about. I know you still might not know what you want to do with your life yet, but if you show that you are trying to discover yourself by focusing your involvement, it will show, in a good way… You will discover yourself as a person and be MUCH better prepared to write that important personal statement.

How can I find out the reason why someone got an honour ie. an MBE?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

As the first answer rightly says, The London Gazette publishes the lists. Orders of the British Empire (GBE, KBE/DBE, CBE, OBE and mbe) are now awarded mainly to civilians and service personnel for public service or other distinctions and has a military and a civil division. The Queen chooses the recipients on the advice of the Prime Minister, to whom recommendations are sent either by government ministers or by members of the public. The honours are published in the official Crown newspaper, the London Gazette. Private nominations, made by individuals or by representatives of organisations to the Prime Ministers’ Office, make up around a quarter of all recommendations. Honorary awards for foreign nationals are recommended by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. A number of these orders for chivalry are made after a personal decision made by the Queen.

What people have said about The Michael Coren Show-
Fearless. Unpredictable. Funny. Never boring. There’s nobody and nothing like Michael Coren in journalism anywhere.
-David Frum
Michael Coren is a brilliant intellectual, but with a double dose of humour and common sense. His columns are a must-read road map for anyone looking to make sense of current events.
-Ezra Levant
A woman put on trial for wearing clothing deemed indecent by Sudanese authorities was jailed for refusing to pay a court-ordered fine, her lawyer said. Lubna al-Hussein had faced 40 lashes for wearing pants deemed too tight and a blouse considered too sheer. The threat of lashes was dropped when a court found her guilty but ordered instead that she pay a fine. She had resigned from her UN job to face the penalty.
Today a 12-year-old Yemeni girl, who was forced into marriage, died during a painful childbirth that also killed her baby, a children’s rights group said Monday. Born into an impoverished family in Hodeidah, Fawziya was forced to drop out of school and married off to a 24-year-old man last year, al-Qureshi said. Child brides are commonplace in Yemen, especially in the Red Sea Coast where tribal customs hold sway. The Yemeni parliament tried in February to pass a law, setting the minimum marriage age at 17. But the measure has not reached the president because many parliamentarians argued it violates sharia, or Islamic law, which does not stipulate a minimum age.
Many Muslims believe that because Canada is a secular country, its secular legal system makes it difficult for them to govern themselves by the personal laws of their own religion. For instance, Canada’s marriage and divorce laws differ from Muslim law. The National Association of Women and the Law, the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, and the National Organization of Immigrant and Visible Minority Women of Canada argued that under Shariah law, men and women are not treated equally. One of the major concerns of people critical of Shariah law is that it is subject to interpretation and evolution. There is virtually no formal certification process to designate someone as being qualified to interpret Islamic law. As it stands today, almost anyone can make rulings as long as they have the appearance of piety and a group of followers. In May 2005, the Quebec National Assembly unanimously supported a motion to block the use of Shariah law in Quebec courts.
I never had cared to know what Islam was, only when the Second Intifada started by the Islamic Jihad Palestinians against Israel in the Fall of 2000. Then September 11, 2001 happened, you know, What the hells going on here? As time goes on and terror attacks, I see Islam a lot more being on the news here in Canada. In Ontario a whole this summer there was a quadruple honour killing. Two summers ago a father in Ontario killed his daughter because she didnt want to wear the hijab, the traditional head scarf. I have no hate for Muslims, but I cant stand their religion that they want me to understand. No thanks. Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, name an Islamic Religiously run country that respects its people equally. The West has equal time.

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Block all those, whose answers show up his anti monarchy questions, for what they are, total hogwash. It is the sign of a coward for anyone to block freedom of speech.I know of at lest one other person that he has blocked for exactly the same reason.
I Thank everyone for their input.Another reason that a coward would block us all is that,we are now unable to report any of his questions that breach Yahoo guidelines.Does any one have any suggestions as to what we may do now?

I have been blocked by all three.Coward is the first name that comes to mind.I think Yahoo should monitor these cretins. They don’t belong in Q & A as they are nothing but trolls.
