R there really gov’t grants for small business for minority women?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

There are grants for minorities and for women — but not really for starting a business

From the government grants database Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance CFDA http://www.cfda.gov here is an example of a grant for minorities:

————————————————-
11.803 minority business OPPORTUNITY CENTER (MBOC) http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.PROGRAM_TEXT_RPT.SHOW?p_arg_names=prog_nbr&p_arg_values=11.803
Applicant Eligibility
Applicants for this program are Federal, State or local government entities or quasi governmental entities, American Indian Tribes, colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations, and for project organizations.
————————————————-

Here’s an example of grants for women:

————————————————-
59.043 WOMEN’S BUSINESS OWNERSHIP ASSISTANCE http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.PROGRAM_TEXT_RPT.SHOW?p_arg_names=prog_nbr&p_arg_values=59.043
Applicant Eligibility
Private, nonprofit organizations having experience in effectively training and counseling business women. Public educational institutions and State and local governments are not eligible.
————————————————-

Go to CFDA — you will find that most grants are given to local governments, states, non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities. Very very rarely for individuals.

And for businesses, only for developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.

Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

Iowa Women’s Foundation http://www.iawf.org/
New Mexico Women’s Foundation http://www.nmwf.org/guidelines.html

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

Clinton Fundraiser And Friend Guilty – What Say You?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

One of Bill and Hillary Clinton’s top fundraisers and close friend has pleaded guilty to swindling a major public school district out of millions of dollars by exploiting a program designed to help minority businesses.

The wealthy Chicago businessman, James Levin, has contributed lots of money to a number of nationally known Democratic candidates and served as a White House liaison for other fundraisers during Hillary’s first Senate campaign. In fact, he helped organize a Hollywood gala that raised millions for Hillary and landed her finance director in court for concealing the money.

A former strip club owner, Levin also served on the national finance committees for Hillary’s senate campaign as well as Al Gore’s presidential run in 2000. As president of an Illinois fencing company, he admitted bribing the owners of women and minority-owned businesses to act as front companies so that he could benefit from a program designed to help those businesses win contracts.

cont.
From 1998 to 2001, his fencing company, Tru-Link, received nearly $3 million in contracts from the school district after falsely representing that portions of the work would be performed by minority- or women-owned firms.
Levin also admitted that he over billed Chicago Public Schools $207,000 for snow removal work that his company won in a separate contract.

So far no comment from the New York Senator or her husband, the former president, on the conviction of a rich friend who helped them raise millions of dollars.
Well CK,

I say if you do your homework that you will find out that 40 Democratic Senators can be linked to Jack Abramoff.

Be ready for a "Well a Republican did this, and a Republican did that" response from the left.

And it’s good to see that the Democrats aren’t as perfect as they claim themselves to be.

How can you start a business if you don’t have enough collateral to get the loan approved?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

If someone is trying to start a small business in this economy it is harder than it used to be. According to the banks, and credit unions the bad economy has limited the loans available for startup funds. And you have to provide a higher percentage of collateral for the loan. Even if you could qualify for a minority loan under normal circumstances it is more difficult now. How can you start your own business if you can’t gett the funds to get it off the ground?

It appears that you have never been in business before, therefore, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you’ll start a web based business or one with a store front ands nail down all of the one time and ongoing costs. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to the link below and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting your small business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market) and how you’ll go after them.

You’ll need to register the business with your state controller’s office and make sure that you check to see whether any city and county licenses are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.

Try linking to YCHANGE International and read some of the articles especially the ones about a business plan and getting a loan.
